45:23

Sahih International

Have you seen he who has taken as his ‘god’ his [own] desire, and Allah has sent him astray due to knowledge and has set a seal upon his hearing and his heart and put over his vision a veil? So who will guide him after Allah? Then will you not be reminded?

Abdul Majid Daryabadi
Beholdest thou him who taketh for his ‘god’ his own vain desire and Allah hath sent him astray despite his knowledge, and hath sealed up his hearing and his heart, and hath set on his sight a covering? Who will guide him after Allah? Will ye not then be admonished?
Ali Ünal
Do you ever consider him who has taken his lusts for his deity, and whom ‘God’ has (consequently) led astray though he has knowledge (of guidance and straying), and sealed his hearing and his heart, and put a cover on his sight? Who, then, can guide him after God (has led him astray)? Will you not then reflect and be mindful?
Faridul Haque
Just look at him who makes his desire as his ‘God’, and Allah has sent him astray despite his having knowledge, and set a seal upon his ears and his heart, and a covering upon his eyes; so who will guide him after Allah? So do you not ponder?
Muhammad Mahmoud Ghali
So have you seen him who has taken to him his prejudice to be his ‘god’ and Allah has led him into error in spite of knowledge, (i.e., although he had (some) knowledge) and has sealed his hearing and his heart, and made an envelopment on his beholding? (i.e., eyesight) Who will then guide him ever after Allah? Will you then not be mindful?

Critical Reasoning:

What’s the direct context of this Ayah?

Even without going to a Tafseer, with a general knowledge of Islam you know that Rasulullah SallaAllahu Alaihi Wa Sallam has dealt with basically two parties. So, this Ayah has straight connection to either:
The Jews of Madina? Or,
The Mushriqun of the Quraish?

All of the translations took this Ayah in the context of a Kafir to whom knowledge was reached yet he followed his desire, therefore, Allah led him astray.

But do you just leave it there?

Then how do you understand this Ayah, how do you implement this Ayah in your context today?

The Easy one is:

You deliver the message of Islam with logic, rationality, scientific evidence to a person (therefore the knowledge of Islam reached to him) yet he sticks on to his philosophy, his HAWA and does not turn to Allah, therefore, Allah led him astray and sets seal on his organs.
Understandable?

Then, do you just stop there?

Does an Ayah only apply to the context or the background it revealed at the time of Rasulullah Salla Allahu Alaihi Wa Sallam and you left it there?
Or we apply the context in our times?

Therefore, let’s get into little deeper!

As for the HAWA itself,
Could this be applied to a knowledgeable Muslim, to a Muslim Scholar too?
Could a Muslim after having a knowledge of Allah yet follows his desire?
Otherwise, how would you explain the misguidance of those Scholars who are calling the Ummah to Shirk and Kufr, about whom Rasulullah SallaAlahu Alaihi Wa Sallam warned about that “There will be the Ulema of my Ummah who will be the worst creature under the sky”?
And Allah knows best.

Naujubillah! May Allah protect you and me from our Hawa, from following our desire.
“Allahumma inni aujubika min sharri Nafsee”
“Allahumma inni aaujubika min hawaa”

The second important issue:

You won’t find most of the Muslims are generally aware about this shirk of taking their HAWA as their ILAHA. Not many Ulema emphasis this.
And they should specify clearly how an act might be regarded as comes from Hawa.

How do you find those acts of Hawa in today’s Muslim scholars?

Few Examples:

When a Imam of Haramain gives statement that US President Trump and Saudi govt. is working for peace in the region.
When a scholar does not understand the Taghut of a govt who declares Haram what Allah made Halal (They, the govt., made below 18 marraige of a women Haram) and yet these Astray Scholars do not understand their (govt’) act as an act of RABB, yet they think they are Muslim just because they say ‘La Ilaha Illa Allah’.
Only because these scholars follow their Hawa,
Their love of the comfort, their love for the honor, their love for popularity blinds them, therefore Allah sets the seal in their heart!
And Allah knows best.
May Allah guide these scholars. Ameen.
