4:60

Sahih International
Have you not seen those who claim to have believed in what was revealed to you, [O Muhammad], and what was revealed before you? They wish to refer legislation to Taghut, while they were commanded to reject it; and Satan wishes to lead them far astray.

Let’s do a critical REASONING!

First we break down the Ayah as it has 4 distinctive parts connected with each other.

(Part 1)

“Have you not seen those who claim to have believed in what was revealed to you, [O Muhammad], and what was revealed before you?”

“They wish to refer legislation to Taghut”

“While they were commanded to reject it;”

and Satan wishes to lead them far astray.

PART 1:
=====

Part 1:

“Have you not seen those who claim to have believed in what was revealed to you, [O Muhammad], and what was revealed before you?

“Have you not seen those? Who CLAIM to have believed in what was revealed to you”,

Let’s understand the expression/ connotation Allah used here and what does this expression means for us.

Who Allah talking about here?

Those who CLAIM they believed in Quran, (as that’s what revealed to Rasulullah sallillahu alaihi wa sallam). Meaning, this Ayah is talking about those who THINK they are Muslims.

  • “and what was revealed before you?”

Who believed in the books before Muhammad Rasulullah?
Muslim!

Therefore, it seems Allah exclusively talking about Muslims using this expression.
But why? What’s the meaning of this expression?

Let’s understand it by using an analogy of the same expression:

“Did you see that man, who claims I owe money to him?”
What does it mean to you?
When do you say that?
Only when you do not recognize that you ever took money from this man.
It means that you have no idea what the man is talking about or what the man claims about.
You tell this only when you DENY what he claims!
You tell this about the man only when his claim is not acceptable to you.

Thus what we can derive from Allah’s expressions to those Muslims in this Ayah?
“Have you not seen those? Who CLAIM to have believed in what was revealed to you and what was revealed before you?”

Meaning, Allah don’t recognise what these people claim about.
Meaning, these people claim that they are Muslim but Allah don’t accept it.

This should be the first thing to understand from this Ayah.

PART 2:

  • They wish to refer legislation to Taghut,

Now, let’s understand this 2nd part.

We now have the reason why Allah does not recognise those people as Muslim.
They seek judgement from TAGHUT.

Is that understanding clear, En Shaa Allah?
Let’s summerise it so far:
Allah use that expression of NOT RECOGNIZING those people who claim themselves as Muslims who seek judgement from TAGHUT.

Let’s look at the things in another perspective:

How many parties involve here in this situation?
Two.

One is Taghut.
And the other is who goes to Taghut.

We still have something to think about this Part 2.

What is TAGHUT?
What is meant by TAGHUT?
What does it mean by “REFERRING the law to Taghut?

We can simplify the understanding here:
The 2nd party taking the case to Taghut for judgement.
Willing to be judged by Taghut.

Do we get an understanding now about Taghut?
Taghut is someone or an authority who deals with law.
And what law is that?
A law other than what Allah revealed.
Meaning, those who judge by a law other than Allah’s Sharia’a, Allah called them Taghut.

So, now summerise our understanding of the first two parts of the Ayah.
Allah doesn’t recognise those as Muslims who take the case to Taghut to be judged by a law other than Allah’s Law.

We can broaden our understanding from here in order to find the implication of this Ayah in our life. But we decided to limit this contemplation within the frame of this Ayah. Though the question remains in the following situations:

(1) What about a Muslim who is forced to obey the Law of Taghut?
(2) What about a Muslim who has no idea that he lives and automatically subjected and obeys the law of Taghut?
(3) What about a Muslim who willingly and directly submits to Taghut?

We will En Shaa Allah seek the answers to these questions in their proper place.
