7:180

“And to Allah belong the best names, so invoke Him by them.
And leave [the company of] those who practice deviation concerning His names.
They will be recompensed for what they have been doing.”

“আর আল্লাহর জন্য রয়েছে সব উত্তম নাম। কাজেই সে নাম ধরেই তাঁকে ডাক।
আর তাদেরকে বর্জন কর, যারা তাঁর নামের ব্যাপারে বাঁকা পথে চলে।
তারা নিজেদের কৃতকর্মের ফল শীঘ্রই পাবে।”

:|: Quran for Critical Reasoning :|;

Part 1.1 of the Ayah:

وَلِلَّهِ الْأَسْمَاءُ الْحُسْنَىٰ

All the best names belong to Allah. Or it can be translated as ‘To Allah belong the best names.’

Part 1.2 of the Ayah:

فَادْعُوهُ بِهَا

This part of the Ayah gives a command/ directive about the manner of Dua, as to how to make Dua to Allah, Al-Mujeeb, which is, by citing/ calling/ mentioning HIM by HIS best names.

Part 2 of the Ayah:

وَذَرُوا الَّذِينَ يُلْحِدُونَ فِي أَسْمَائِهِ

And then, the next section of the Ayah tells Muslims to leave, reject those who engage in wrong practices about Allah’s names.

Now, what is the wrong practices concerning Allah’s names?
Traditionally, the earlier generation of scholars referred to these wrong practices as calling Allah ‘Lat’, ‘Ujja’, ‘Manat’, by the names of the idols that Quraish used to call.

But most of the Muslims adopted an Idol name, ‘Khuda’/ ‘Khoda’ and started calling Allah by that idol name after the advent of Islam to Pagan Persia, and then they carried it forward later in the Indian subcontinent.

And then, what happened in the last 300 years?
Most of the Muslims living/ associating with the Kuffar and the Mushrikun, calling Allah by another idol name, ‘God’ (a name of idol originated from a German tribe, which English people have carried forward)

Thus, deviation in regards to Allah’s names has been in practice for a long time by the Muslims.
And these only happened because Muslims do not contemplate the Quran. An Ayah of the Quran do not impact them. They do not learn Islam from the Quran; rather, they learn Islam from a ‘package’ carried forward from the earlier generations of the Ulama. Thus, due to the blind following of the ‘package’, they failed to track those deviations in Allah’s names adopted in their times.

They read the Tafsirs of the earlier generations, which relate these Ayat to the Idols of the Quraish, and they limit their understanding of the Ayah to that time, as if this Quran was only sent for that time.

As if, in our times, we don’t need to follow what the Quran says; we only follow what the earlier generations explained to us about the Quran.

As if the Quran is not a Wahee to us anymore, the understanding of the earlier generations is the Wahee for us.

This is one of the many examples of how the Muslims have abandoned the Quran, abandoned the Wahee for a long time.

Simply, we can say, calling Allah ‘God’/ ‘Khuda’/ ‘Khoda’ is a sinful act as it shows a negation of Allah’s command. Because these are not Allah’s names. These were the names of Idols.

Therefore, by calling/ mentioning Allah as ‘God’/ ‘Khuda’/ ‘Khoda’, a Muslim not only disobeys the order of Allah, Al-Hakeem, but he also pronounces the word of Idol, he is actually calling the idol ‘God’, unknowingly or knowingly, which could be a Shirk of ‘words of mouth’, shirk by the tongue.
And Allah knows best.

And then, Allah asks Muslims to leave those who still insist on using those names for Allah.

Now, argument comes. (shaitan is not sitting idle, May Allah protect us from shaitan)
That, brother, when Quraish called ‘Lat’, ‘Ujja’, ‘Manat’, they actually worship those idols.
But today, Muslims do not worship those idols whose name was ‘God’ or ‘Khuda’; they call Allah by using those names only. You should not put it on the same scale.

Seems very logical, doesn’t it?
But read the Ayah again, Allah doesn’t say, ‘those who practice deviation in HIS WORSHIP’.
Rather, HE says, “those who practice deviation regarding HIS NAMES’

Then, isn’t calling Allah by those names of idols is a deviation in HIS names?

Part 3 of the Ayah:

سَيُجْزَوْنَ مَا كَانُوا يَعْمَلُونَ

Finally, this is a severe warning from Ar-Rahman, who is also Shadidul Eqab.

And Allah knows best.
May Allah give us beneficial knowledge and understanding of Deen.
May Allah save us from HIS punishment.
Ameen.

We have discussed this thoroughly in another place.
