The practice of SHIRK in the ‘Words of Mouth’:

O Muslims, ‘Allah’ is His name, why do you call him ‘God’, ‘Khoda’, ‘Ishwar’ or by other names?
O Muslims, ‘GOD’ is the name of an IDOL and you call your RABB, Allah by that name?
O Muslims, Why do you translate the proper name of Allah as ‘God’?
O Muslims, Why do you call Him ‘God’ when His name is Allah?
O Muslims, Why do you call Him ‘Khoda’ when His name is Allah?
O followers of the ‘Way of the Sahaba’, did Sahaba call Allah as ‘God’?
O followers of the ‘Way of the Salaf’, did ‘Salaf’ call Allah as ‘God’?
O followers of the ‘Way of the Believers’, did the ‘Believers’ call Allah as ‘God’?
O my Muslim brothers and sisters, let’s correct the mistake. Now!

Shirk origin of all other names besides Allah: Evidence from Quran: Yusuf 12:40

مَا تَعْبُدُونَ مِن دُونِهِۦٓ إِلَّآ أَسْمَآءً سَمَّيْتُمُوهَآ أَنتُمْ وَءَابَآؤُكُم مَّآ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ بِهَا مِن سُلْطَٰنٍۚ إِنِ ٱلْحُكْمُ إِلَّا لِلَّهِۚ أَمَرَ أَلَّا تَعْبُدُوٓا۟ إِلَّآ إِيَّاهُۚ ذَٰلِكَ ٱلدِّينُ ٱلْقَيِّمُ وَلَٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَ ٱلنَّاسِ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ

“You worship not besides Him except [mere] names you have named them, you and your fathers, for which Allah has sent down no authority. The legislation is not but for Allah. He has commanded that you worship not except Him. That is the correct deen (the way of life), but most of the people do not know.”

Let’s do a Critical Reasoning of the Ayah first:

Without going to the format of critical reasoning, what do you simply understand from this Ayah?
Allah is clearly, specifically blaming people for worshipping alongside Allah names (names of ‘idols’) that they NAMED THEMSELVES for which Allah sent down no authority (or gave them any right)

Prelude to a Simple Math:

Let me ask you, any Muslim living in the Indian sub-continent, would you call Allah ‘Ghonesh’, the elephant-head one?

Aujubillah, No!

Why Not!

It’s the name of an idol! It’s the thing the Mushrik Hindus call ‘God’, It would be a clear shirk of ‘Words of Mouth’ calling Allah by the word ‘Ghonesh’. No Muslim would have a doubt terming this as a Shirk (Shirk of ‘words of mouth’, maybe a minor Shirk, Allah knows best), whether he does it knowingly or unknowingly.

Well then let me tell you; when you refer to the name of Allah by any other word such as ‘God’, ‘Khoda’, ‘Isshwar’, or by any other names, you are doing the same Shirk. Allah knows best.

How do you say that?

Okay then, let me remind you of your responsibility for being Muslim and then do some critical reasoning by using the brain that Allah honoured us with and made us dignified among all other creations.

What is a Muslim? What is being a Muslim?:

How a Muslim differs from a Kafir?

- A Muslim is the one who, when things are presented to him, uses his mind, he looks for evidence and if it is the truth, he accepts it, that’s the history of people who became Muslim since Rasulullah Sallallahu alaihi wa Sallam started calling to Allah. Ignorance, arrogance, and ego have no place in being a Muslim.
- The truth is presented to him but he ignores it, that’s a character of a Kafir, not of a Muslim.
- The truth is presented to him but he passes it without giving further thought to it, this is the character of an ignorant, Jaheel, not of a Muslim.
- The truth is presented to him, even though he admits it as the truth but does not accept it, that’s the character of a Kafir, not of a Muslim.
- The truth is presented to him and he knows in his heart that it is the truth but denies accepting it; this is the character of an arrogant Kafir, not of a Muslim.
- The truth is presented to him, and he accepts it as the truth but it doesn’t reflect in his actions, he goes back to his habit; this is the character of sheep, the cattle, not of a Muslim.
- Truth is presented to him and even though he accepts it as the truth but he does not practice it rather, he keeps following his father’s ways, that’s the character of a blind follower, not of a Muslim.

The rationality of calling Allah by His name ‘Allah’:

Do you have any idea, why people around the world believe in ‘something’, as a ‘supreme being’, as a deity, as a ‘mother nature’, as ‘God’ of this and that, etc in different forms, ideas, and different names?

Fitrah! The inherent nature of belief in Allah that Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala has put in every human’s heart! (Al-Quran 30:30)

You’re absolutely right but there are more DIRECT causes for their beliefs in the form of ‘God’ around the world. It is because Allah has sent messengers to all nations. And the message was ‘Worship Allah’ and reject Taghut.’ (Quran 16:36)

“And We certainly sent into every nation a messenger, [saying], “Worship Allah and avoid Taghut.””

Did you notice, what Allah mentioned His name as?

‘Allah’

So, whenever Allah sent messages to any nation He mentioned His name as ‘Allah’, you got that?

Therefore, all the people on earth who believe in ‘God’ and worship ‘God’ should call Him by His name ‘Allah’ as that is what is mentioned in the message, right?

Then, why do they call it by other names while they believe in one ‘God’ (Actually Allah?) or many ‘Gods’?

The example of Quraish will give us clear evidence to understand exactly why people call Allah by other names while they still believe in Allah.

But before we go there, let me remind you of the understanding of shirk:

Why did Allah keep sending new messages, new messengers?:

When people forgot the original message, they started doing Shirk with Allah Subhanahu. Even though they believed in Him they also worshipped other objects alongside Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala and because of this, Allah sent a new messenger to them.

It is as if Allah said,

It’s not enough that you believe in me.
It’s not enough that you worship me.
You can’t worship any other things alongside me.
You are my slave, you remain only my slave, you can’t be a slave to any other, not even to your own desires.

Understanding this message with an analogy:

It is as if you are recruited by a company and they gave you the following conditions:

“You work for us and only for us. If you have a second job, you are fired!”

The Quraish Evidence:

Did the Quraish know who Allah was?
Yes!

Did the Quraish believe in Allah?
Yes!

Did they invoke Allah by His name ‘Allah’?
No!

What did they use to call the things they worshipped?
Hubble, Lat, Uzza etc.

The point here is, that Allah asked Rasulullah salla Allahu alaihi wa sallam to ask them “Who created the heavens and the earth?” (Quran 31:25) to which they responded ‘Allah’. This question itself indicates that they didn’t use to call ‘Allah’, nor did they invoke Him by the name ‘Allah’. They used the names of their ‘Gods’ which they and their forefathers invented. (Quran 12:40).

However, only the learned ones recognized Allah by His name ‘Allah’ but for the regular worshipers, do you think they even knew the name of ‘Allah’? Had it been a common name among the masses to call Him ‘Allah’, the question in the Quran wouldn’t have been necessitated in the first place. (Quran 29:63, 10:31)

An analogy of the SHIRK origin of any other names other than ‘Allah’:

Now, do you understand, the ones who believed in Allah (the Quraish) while they knew Allah created the earth and the heavens, their language was Arabic, they knew the word ‘Allah’, which was also an Arabic word, but they wouldn’t call ‘Allah’ when they worship their ‘Gods’.

Then, can you not think about those nations around the world, those who speak in other languages, and how easy it was for them to invent other names for Allah?

Isn’t it very simple to understand that even though Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala sent messengers and informed them that His name is ‘Allah’, they invented other deities (idols) and when they submerged into Shirk for a long time, slowly they knew Allah only by those invented names (12:40)?

Therefore, is it not clear that any other names people call in worship other than Allah must have originated from IDOLS (from other deities they used to worship)?

Now, do you have any doubt about the origin of ‘God’ in English, ‘Khoda’ in Persi, Urdu (which is used in Indian Subcontinent), ‘Isshwor’ in Hindi, that all of these also originated from idols, from paganism?

Let’s now summarize our understanding here:

Allah sent the messengers to every nation (Quran 16:36)
And He mentioned His name as ‘Allah’ (Quran 16:36)

But we found even Quraish (as the Arabic Nation) invented other names (names of idols) besides Allah to worship and call Allah by those invented names (Al-Quran 12:40)

Thus any nation anywhere that invented any other names to worship must have originated from the same idols, the same paganism.

It’s simple math!

And the DISASTER:

And today, you see not only regular Muslims but even a Khateeb frequently saying ‘God’ while he is standing on the Minbar for the Jumu’a Khutbah, addressing the Muslims, while he refers to Allah Ajja wa Jalla. This is a disaster. Inna lillahi wa Inna ilahi rajiun. How successful shaitan has been.

And today it became a normal expression to a Muslim to say ‘O My God! (OMG)’ which is clearly following the Kuffar’s Way of Life, Kuffar’s Deen.

Did not Islam give an expression to use in those situations? Yes, it did. A Muslim can say ‘La Hawla Quwata Illa Billah’, ‘Subhanallah’, ‘Ma Shaa Allah’, ‘La Ilaha Illa Allah’ etc according to the situation.

A Question:

Nations like Hindus, Ancient Romans, Zoroastrians, Ancient Egyptians, and Chinese; invented many names for ‘God’s, we don’t call Allah by those names but how come we call Allah by the name ‘God’ which also has originated from pagans as well?

The possible reasons:

No. 1: It is used only to translate into the language of the people.

No. 2: Apparently this ‘God’ word doesn’t seem attached to any idols today like Hindu’s ‘Ghonesh’ in this case.

Logically it looks okay but you need to dig deep. Allah Subhanahu wa Taa’la clearly stated shaitan is the enemy of the sons of Adam, and he is there to confirm them Jahannam (Naujubillah). We Muslims forgot about shaitan but shaitan didn’t leave us. Whatever devoted worshiper you are, he just needs an element of shirk to fulfil his mission, Jahannam. (Naujubillah).

The wrap of shaitan has been manifold and he wrapped human beings with hundreds of wraps and then he didn’t stop there, he locked those wraps and yet, he didn’t think it was enough, therefore, he threw his wrapped subjects ( the human being), to the deep of the ocean. The evidence is the mass misguidance even with the most learned Muslim scholars today.

So, let’s put these reasons to the test.

Test No. 1: Let’s put yourself as a Dawee:

If you are a Muslim and you embark on an island and you see the people there worshipping many things, and they call these things ‘Mod’, and you are giving them the message of Islam. If you want to give them the Quran, you might want to read the Quran to them in their language. Therefore, when you come to tell them about Allah, you might think to translate it as ‘Mod’ to make them understand that ‘Allah’ means that which should be worshipped, and in their case it is Mod.

I really find it hard; actually, I find it weird to believe that you would really translate the name of Allah to ‘Mod’. I think no Muslim with basic love for Allah will tell them that Allah is like ‘Mod’ or saying ‘ You can call Allah as ‘Mod’, the things they worship. Rather he will emphasize the name of ‘Allah’ as the only ‘being’ that is to be worshipped.

But something weirder happened and surprisingly tonnes of Muslims including Muslim scholars have been following this weird thing in Islam by translating Allah as ‘God’.

Test No. 2: The Translation of PROPER NAME:

The unprecedented is only possible when you understand the power of shaitan.
You would never find that someone’s proper name is translated. A proper name stays as it is in translation too.

Let’s say you have the name of a person in your language. Would people who speak other languages change your name to their language? Would you even allow that? Where in the world would you see a proper name of a person being translated that makes the person happy?

Maybe a person translates his name because he doesn’t like the sound it makes when it is pronounced in the other language or he might like himself acceptable to them by making a little change (such an example is, Chinese people, they have an ‘English’ name when they live in an English speaking country for whatever reason, they know it).

But you check it yourself, a person with high dignity doesn’t let his name be pronounced incorrectly, he repeatedly insists on correcting the person who is pronouncing it wrong.

And then find any person who allows his name to be spelled wrong. You won’t find any on the planet Earth.

But O Muslim, how is it that you dared to change the name of the one who owns this universe to make it acceptable to the Kuffars, to make it to their level?

The main reason behind this mass misguidance of the Ummah:

There’s no other way to conceive about the cause of this mass misguidance of the Ummah except realising the fact that the Ummah has long been born under Kuffar’s authority, raised and shaped by the Kuffar’s policy, organisations, rules and regulations, Kuffar’s media and the Kuffar’s education systems. Therefore, the Ummah of the first few generations (last couple of centuries) adopted many things of the Kuffar that were either forced or brainwashed and now the Ummah of the current few generations got used to it and accepted Kuffar’s Deen wholeheartedly. May Allah guide us.

Therefore, it is understandable, that something you have been used to since your childhood, something that has been used by our most learned and most respectable Ulema of our times, it would be very tough to swallow, I understand that. Therefore, you might not be convinced merely by the analytical conclusion. You might want to dig deep and check it for yourself, particularly for the word ‘God’. let’s check the origin of the word ‘God’ then.

Test 3: History: The origin of ‘God’:

And now look at the second reason where you don’t see apparently any particular ‘idol’ attached to the word ‘God’.

So, my brothers, let’s look at the history, why, and how this has happened so that you might know why this shirk of ‘word of mouth’ is widely accepted by Muslims around the world.

In which language does the word ‘God’ belong to?

English.

Did Allah send any revelation in the English language?

Not that I know of. The English language itself was created earliest around the 5th century (https://www.merriam-webster.com/help/faq-history) which was the time of the last revelation to Rasulullah Salla Allahu alaihi wa Sallam. So, you can clearly discard that possibility (logically speaking)

Then, where they got the word ‘God’ in the English language from?

The word “God” found its way into the English language through Christianity through the translations as the King James Bible of 1611. But its origins are decidedly both racial and “pagan.”

It is from the ‘English’ people who originated from ‘closely related Germanic tribes’. And in that language, they used to call something ‘Godan’/’GOTT’’ which originated from paganism (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/God_(word)) (The detailed references are at the bottom)

And these people used to worship hundreds of Gods under different names like the Romans and the ancient Egyptians.

So, when they became ‘English’ they transformed the name ‘GOTT/’GODAN’ to ‘GOD’ in the English language. This is how simple it happened.

Later the English-speaking Jews and Christians while translating their scriptures into English; adopted the name ‘GOD’ in their scriptures. and it was easy for them because they were already submerged in the Shirk load of the mountains, therefore, tiny pebbles of Shirk here and there won’t make any difference to their loads!

And that’s when an English-speaking Kafir translated Quran into English he had no problem mentioning Allah as ‘God’. And that’s how it became common and easy to translate even by Muslim translators later.

So, do you have any doubt now that the word ‘God’ also originated from pagan worshipers?
Do you have any doubt that there is no difference between ‘Ghonesh’ and ‘God’?
Inna Lillahi wa Inna ilahi rajiun.

A side History of the English translation of Al-Quran:

In 1647, Andrew Du Ryer produced the first French translation in Paris. This first translation directly from Arabic since the Middle Ages was a marked improvement from those produced over the years since 1143.

From Du Ryer’s translation, the first English translation was produced in 1649: ‘The Alcoran of Mahomet’ by Alexander Ross. It was rendered in French rather than Arabic, making it an indirect translation with associated problems. Nonetheless, the Ross translation is important as the first complete print of an English Quran and it became significant for the time in which it was produced.

And then George Sale translated the Quran into English in 1734, it is understandable that he had to translate it into English as ‘God’ because the English-speaking Jews and Christians had already taken and adopted the name ‘God’

Similar things happened possibly in all translations of the Quran in other languages. When in 1886 the first published Quran in Bangla was translated by a Hindu Missionary, who translated the name of Allah as ‘Isswar’

What about the word ‘Khoda’?

Obviously the same reason, the same origin. May Allah guide us.
It was the name of a Zoroastrian ‘God’.
“Khuda (Persian: خُدا, romanized: xodâ, Persian pronunciation: [xoˈdɒː]) or Khoda is the Persian word for God. Originally, it was used as a noun in reference to Ahura Mazda (the name of the God in Zoroastrianism)”

Thus there’s no doubt that ‘Khoda’ in Persi, Urdu has the same pagan history attached to their origins.

A warning from your brother: Consequences:

Who do you resonate with?

Kuffar and Mushrikeen!

What is their status with your Rabb, Allah?

They are the worst of the creations and you are the best of the creations. (Quran 98:6)

How come you utter the name of your Rabb, Allah as the way Kuffar call Him?

So don’t ignore this, don’t let shaitan whisper you logic saying “It’s a minor issue”, “Never a big scholar has raised this issue in such a scale” or “This we do for Dawah purpose only”. These all logics come from none except shaitan if you at least know shaitan and how he works.

If you claim you follow the ‘Way of the Sahaba’ and the ‘Way of the Salaf’ then, check how the Sahaba presented Islam to a new people, in a new land. Check if they called Allah by the name those people in a new land have called their ‘God’.

Therefore, my brothers, I warn you of the consequences of uttering this word in your mouth, you don’t take a chance of having any sort of shirk associated with you even if it is the only shirk of ‘words of mouth’.

The correct motivation:

But let’s leave all logic, and arguments and look at it in a practical manner. Let’s give them a pass mark for whatever reason they translated Allah’s name to ‘God’, that’s ok, they didn’t see people worshipping any idol by the name of ‘God’, therefore, they didn’t see any Shirk in it, so, let’s think that they had to make the local people understand what ‘Allah’ means because the people never heard of it before, therefore they had to translate it. Let’s take it easy. We don’t blame those who translated it as they had reasons. And finally, we say, “Whatever is done is done”.

But we need to correct it today, right now!
Why?
Because there is neither a single nation nor a community left today that did not hear the word Allah or does not know the meaning of Allah. Then why would you still call Allah as God? Only because you speak English? No, my brother, go back to the proper name issue. You don’t translate any other proper names in a local language.

Therefore, I call you, O my Muslim Ummah, be Muslim, you hear it, you check it and you act on it if it is the truth. Don’t let your habit or your ego overpass it and take it easy.

On the other hand, if you do, It will show your love for Allah. imagine how much He would love to hear you calling him by His name that He calls Himself and it will show how you care anything little about your Rabb, Allah, The Magnificent.

And Allah knows best. And I ask Allah, Al-Hadi, the only guide, to guide Muslims. Ameen. And I ask Allah, my Rabb, to give Muslims strength to reject the falsehood! Ameen.

Yet finally, I have to mention one last point to motivate you, En Shaa Allah, to make you stop uttering the word ‘God’ anymore. In Sura Nur 24:55, Allah promised, that He will give the authority (Khilafah) of the land to those who (1) Believe, (2) do righteous deeds (Saliheen) and (3) do not do Shirk with Him.

So, if you want an Islamic authority, the Khilafah, an Islamic State, which will implement the law of Allah on the earth, which will stand against the oppression of the Kuffar, then get rid of the slightest Shirk from your life. And Allah knows best.

And A drop of peace:

I found a tafsir by Abdul Amjid Daryabadi, Published his Tafsir in 1941. He always retained the translation of Allah as Allah, Al Hamdulillah, May Allah reward him immensely with Jannat Al Firdous. And he was careful about using words in Christian terms such as the spelling of the name of Rasulullah Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam as ‘Muhammad’ not ‘Mohammad’ that the Kuffar do intentionally to give it a distorted meaning. May Allah destroy their plot and guide them, whoever He wishes.

And I ask Allah, Al-Hadi, The only guide, to guide Muslims. Ameen.

I quote these references only for those who are already carrying a mountain load of shirk, therefore, this shirk of ‘word of mouth’ might feel like a pebble to them.

For me and for those who fear Allah and love Allah Subahanahu, the evidence from the Quran (which I quote above) and human reasoning that Allah, the Best of Creators, has created humans and honoured with it, is enough to get rid of this shirk of ‘word of mouth’.

So, how and when did this title or name become adopted into modern languages?

Encyclopaedia Britannica, 11^th edition, says, “GOD – the common Teutonic word for a personal object of religious worship… applied to all those superhuman beings of the heathen mythologies. The word ‘god’ on the conversion of the Teutonic races to Christianity was adopted as the name of the one Supreme Being…”

The Teutonic pagans called all their idols by the generic name “gott” or “god,”

Webster’s Twentieth Century Dictionary, Unabridged, 1^st edition, says, “The word is common to Teutonic tongues… It was applied to heathen deities and later, when the Teutonic peoples were converted to Christianity, the word was elevated to the Christian sense.”

James Hastings, Encyclopedia of Religion and Ethics, vol. 6, pg 302, reads, “After the conversion of the Teutons to Christianity the word came to be applied also to the Christian Deity… Its etymology and its original meaning are obscure, and have been much debated.”

Even worse is that the Old Netherlands languages regarded god as an idol

“Gott” or “god” was not only a title, but used as a name too, amongst the Teutonic tribes.

“Goda” as a proper name of an idol. Moreover, the same author relates how Woden, “The name of the highest god,” also called Woten and Odan, was also called Godan.

Although the majority of dictionaries do not acknowledge it, there are some that frankly admit it and clearly state that the origin of the word “god” is uncertain or unknown. Why uncertain or unknown? What was there to hide?

Other dictionaries propose that the most likely origin of the word “god” is the Indo-Germanic (or Sanskrit) word huta. Some dictionaries prefer to spell this ancient word ghuta. Huta (or Ghuta) was of course an appellative or another name for Indra, Indian Sun-deity, as the more comprehensive dictionaries duly admit.

In the Indo-Germanic dictionaries, there is only one word which resembles the word “god,” in fact, it is pronounced exactly the same. This is the word ghodh. Dictionaries which are not Indo-Germanic, usually spell this word with an “a.”

Prof. Dr. Eduard Kuck, Luneburger Wörterbuch, vol. 1, pg 594, admits that Gott, got, gode, gade, god and guth (gud) are all the same word! Note well: God is the same as gade! Schiller & L3bben, MittelniederdeutschesWörterbuch, says the same on pg 135: got, gode, gade and Gott are the same!

A third witness is that of Wossidlo-Teuchert, MecklenburgischesWörterbuch, vol. 3, pg 231, which confirms this and says that the word Gott was anciently known as Gade.

Dr. Arnold Walder, Germanisches Urzeit, pg 300, says that the following words are the same or related: the German GUT, the German GOTT, the Aramaic GAD-a, the Arabian GUD, and also the Greek AGATH-os. Oskar Schade, Altdeutsches Wörterbuch, vol. 1, pg 342 and 359, still tries to distinguish between gut (gud) and got (gott, god), but the lists of variants of these two words are virtually interchangeable!

Such was the spirit of paganism which started creeping in at Alexandria in the 2^nd century and which finally took over at Rome in the 4^thcentury. From there syncretistic mixed religion spread to Europe where it took a few more centuries for it to become further mixed with the pagan elements of Germanic (Teutonic) ancestors.
